The Department of Surgery has long invested in basic and translational
research. We are pursuing a rich variety of research programs that investigate
both the basic biological mechanisms as well as the therapeutic breakthroughs
that are shaping the practice of Surgery. The Department currently holds
approximately $10.5M in extramural funding and has historically ranked
about 20th nationally in NIH funding.
Our research effort is driven by both our basic scientists, who conduct
full-time research, and our translational scientists, who combine commitments
to research programs that link with their clinical practices. Research
in the department is multidisciplinary and collaborative, and is centered
in the following core areas:
•
Cancer and Metastasis
•
Cardiothoracic and Vascular
•
Epithelial Pathobiology
•
Immunology and Inflammation
•
Tissue Biology, Bioengineering and Imaging
